Traffic Rules

For a pleasant and safe journey, here are the main traffic rules which are applicable in Romania:

Seatbelts
The use of seatbelt is compulsory inside built areas, as well as outside them. It will be used by the driver and also by all other passengers.

Low beam
The use of low beam is compulsory during daytime too, on highways, express roads and national - european roads (E).

Speed
The maximum legal speed limits are:
- inside built areas: 50 km / h
- on highways: 130 km / h
- on express roads or national - european roads: 100 km / h
- on other types of roads: 90 km / h
Each time the maximum speed limit changes, for a certain segment of the public road, it is properly marked through traffic signs.

Alcohol and drugs - not accepted
In Romania, the traffic police have the right to stop and test the driver of a vehicle, regarding alcohol and drug consumption. If the driver has an alcohol content under 0,40 mg/l, he/she will be fined. Driving with a blood alcohol level higher 0,40 mg/l (= 0,80 g/l pure alcohol in the blood) is punishable by imprisonment of 1 to 5 years. The punishment is the same for drivers who have taken drugs or pills with similar effects.

In all three situations, the vehicle will be immobilized and your driving license will be withdrawn.

Mobile phones
You may not use a mobile phone while driving unless you use a hands-free set. Failure to comply can result in a fine.

In case of accident
If certain damage occurred to the vehicle, but not caused by a car accident, you need to go to a police station.

Damage only accidents
Remove the vehicle from the public road; if this cannot be done, move the vehicle as close to the kerb as possible and signal its presence using reflective breakdown triangles and hazard warning lamps.

Casualty accidents
Immediately call the emergency number 112. Do not move the vehicle, do not cause changes to the place of the accident and do not wipe traces. Do not leave the place of the accident.
