South Journey
Navigate around Slovenia Piran ... Mediterranean atmosphere greeted us upon reaching the coast. We were told that though the Slovenian coast stretches only over 40 kilometres, some of the finest Mediterranean settlements can be found there. Piran is well worth a visit, the locals said. We walked into the Piran old town, climbed its town walls and ended up drinking coffee in the Tartini Square. Instead of maestro’s violin, seagulls could be heard. Time came for a rest at one of Piran's many hotels... ... the morning has risen, and there we were, riding towards Slovenian inland. The Postojna Cave, acclaimed one of Slovenia's fines and longest karst caves, was our first stop on the route heading westwards. We awed at the magnificence of the cave and its 21 kilometres of underground passages. The cave is also home to the endemic 'human fish' – Proteus anguinus. We marvelled at the legend of the Predjama Castle. Upon taking leave we promised to ourselves that we would surely come back, and headed for the busy Ljubljana streets... Ljubljana ... the bustle typical of all major European cities awaited us in Slovenia's capital. We could see why Ljubljana has been named City of Culture, and why the Ljubljana folk are so proud of the city's old quarter – traditional meeting place of the young. We were drawn to the picturesque marketplace just across the Three Bridges running over the Ljubljanica river. The visit to one of the fashionable restaurants and a shopping mall followed.....
