Lake Bled
... we reached Bled while the morning light was glittering on the lake. We set for a short walk by the well-tended lake side. Soon the renowned fresh-made cream cakes lured us into one of Bled's many cakeshops. The day was a beautiful one, so we drove to the entrance of the Vintgar gorge carved by the Radovna river during the Ice Age when ice and cold reigned the Bled area. After walking through the narrow canyon by the roaring river, we set for the castle perched on a cliff overlooking the lake. We had just enough time for a visit to the islet in the middle of the lake and pressed the wishing bell in St. Mary's church...

Vršič pass
... the ride through the Upper Sava Valley was a short one as we shifted into a faster gear on the highway. In Kranjska Gora we stopped to admire the Jasna lake on which the silhouette of the mountain Prisojnik was reflected. Soon we headed for the Vršič Pass. The numerous serpentine bends, built by Russian prisoners of war during WWI, did put our driving abilities to test! On top of the pass, at 1611 metres, we could see a number of hikers setting for the nearby summits. A scenic descent ride brought us to one of the most awing valleys in the Alps – the Trenta valley...

Trenta, the valley of the Soča river
... the source of the emerald-clear Soča lies in the heart of the Julian Alps, widely known by their raving beauty. The Soča valley, with farms scattered on patches of grass, goes by the name of Trenta in its upper part. The Trenta folk are generous and merry – real highlanders. The wild rapids of the Soča accompanied us all the way to Bovec, were we tested our kayaking skills – there were the river calmed a little...

The Mangart Saddle

... a well-built road making hairpin bends and passing through several tunnels took us to the Mangart Saddle (1906 metres) – the highest-lying point in Slovenia accessible by car. The Saddle offers magnificent views over the Dolomites and the Karawanken on the one side and the Adriatic Sea on the other.
