Avis History

Warren Avis is the founder of Avis.

During the Second World War Warren Avis was a major in the American Air Ministry forces. After the end of the war he flied a lot on a bomber. During these flights he always took with him a bicycle. It gave him freedom to move freely in a new place. After discharge from the army Warren Avis faced social life problems. It was forbidden to enter a plain with a bicycle, after landing he had to wait for a taxi. One of the days like this was in 1946. Avis was tired to wait taxi so long and thought that many people around the whole world also wait for a taxi. And it would be much better if there is any car on hand.

1946 - Warren Avis founds the world's first car rental location Avis Airlines Rent a Car Systems at Willow Run Airport, Detroit, USA.

1953 – Avis’s international expansion begins with franchise operations in Europe, Mexico and Canada.

1965 - Formally expands in the international market by founding the representations in Europe, Africa and Middle East (Avis Europe). It becomes a leading rental company in these regions in 1973. Since then Avis is number one among rental companies and one of the rental leaders in North and Latin America.

– Avis offers major technological innovations. Its Wizard system is the first and still the most extensive on-line, real-time reservation and rental system. Interactive Avis system appears in internet in 2000.

Energy, enthusiasm, innovations and continuous improvement are Avis’s distinctive features during many years.
